There are certain musical traditions within the church that make the heart sing. One such tradition is the playing of “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” on the First Sunday in Advent. In English, we tend to know this hymn as “Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying.” “Wachet auf” is a hymn by Philipp Nicolai, written in 1599. Johann Sebastian Bach’s arrangement of this hymn is the most familiar and popular. Listen in as our esteemed organist and choirmaster Dr. David Foster brings his 50 years of experience to Bach’s version of this hymn during the prelude to today’s celebration of the Holy Communion. The text for today’s sermon is “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another…” (Romans 13:8), which is from the Epistle for the day.
