Dearly Beloved,Summer is now winding to a close and we are all set to launch into all of our fall activities here at All Saints. It is time to catch up and get all of our calendars “synced up.” Men’s Night at the BallgameThe men of the parish had an absolutely fabulous time at our annual excursion to watch the Asheville Tourists play back on August 5. What was great about that evening is we had our brothers from three other area churches with us that night: St. George, Simpsonville; St. Mathew’s, Weaverville, St. Peter’s, Kingsport. All totaled, we had 45 guys show up for the night. There are lots of pictures of the outing on our parish Facebook Page, as well as on our national church’s website. We look forward to our brothers joining us every year from now on. Meetings, Meetings, Meetings TomorrowThere are three important meetings scheduled for tomorrow morning, August 17. They have all been scheduled to make it convenient for all of you to attend, since many of you are involved in more than one group.

Please sign-up on the bulletin board to bring a picnic side dish and to let us know you are coming. Hamburgers and hotdogs are provided. School ChangesClassical Scholars begins their new school year with an open house on Sunday evening, August 25. Eliza Hardin has taken over from Lisa Dillon and I look forward to working with her. As you know, Classical Scholars is a middle school adjunct program for the homeschoolers in our area and over a one hundred kids participate. Dss. Cynthia and I are very happy to have the “noise and confusion” back in the building! In fact, Shakespeare auditions were happening yesterday, bringing the life of the young people back into our daily lives. Lisa Dillon is not going away. She will be heading up a similar program for high school aged youth called Great Expectations. Last I heard, she has forty-five students enrolled. Great Expectation’s school year begins with their open house this coming Sunday, August 18. I am excited about this expansion of education here at the church and having the opportunity to be involved with Lisa, Eliza, the students, and their parents as we live out the biblical principle to “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Safety & SecurityThe safety and security of all of us at All Saints has been an ongoing discussion the vestry has been having. One of things we have come to realize is that we are no longer a “little, country church” and we need to be serious about how we keep ourselves safe. The vestry approved a new key control policy, focusing on who needs particular access to our buildings outside of normal operating hours. As a consequence of this, our complex has been re-keyed. Since our buildings are open nearly every day, except Friday, most of us will be able to enter without the need for a key. This may require a little planning on the part of some who do occasional work here or a quick phone call to the church to see if someone is here. Remember, the office is open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and the schools operate from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., also Monday through Thursday. If you find a need to come into the church outside those times, please feel free to call me, Deaconess Cynthia, or our Wardens, Tom Clyde or Sally Blackburn. Another safety concern is securing our buildings when someone is alone or when children are on the property. The vestry has approved the installation of a camera and intercom system for the main doors of the church, along with a remote locking device for those doors. We are in process of receiving bids to do that work. We will let you know when this system is installed. Picnic ShelterLast year, when St. Timothy’s Church in Swannanoa closed, the leaders there distributed the assets among our area churches for particular needs. All Saints received a significant portion of those assets, with the request that we consider building a picnic shelter on our property. The vestry, at its monthly meeting this past Monday, voted to move ahead with the construction of such a shelter, which we are lovingly referring to as “St. Timothy’s Porch.” The shelter will be situated on the north side of the parish hall and will be approximately 25 ft. wide and 50 ft. long. We have already begun receiving bids on this project. Annual School Supply DrivePlease bring your items for our school supply drive by this coming Sunday, August 18. Please help us in the gathering of supplies for children and their families who cannot afford these basic necessities for the upcoming school year. Boxes are available into which to drop your donations. A purchasing guide is available at the bottom of this post. Parish Education ProgramsGet ready to immerse yourself back in the education life of our parish.
- Adult Sunday School returns on September 8 as we begin an in-depth look at The Articles of Religion. These Articles, commonly known as the “39 Articles,” are one of the formularies our Anglican Way of Christianity and in many ways offer us the boundaries within which we practice our faith.
- Wednesday night Bible Study returns on September 11 and we will return to the Gospel according to St. Matthew. We care about halfway done with that book.
- Tuesday Book Study will begin again on September 17. Our book this fall is Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s “Life Together,” which is a discussion of Christian fellowship.
Check out the rest of your announcements below so that you do not miss a thing here at All Saints. And as always, pray for one another and also for this place, that comfortable Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ might always shine forth from here. Blessings,Fr. Erich
