Dearly Beloved, The Christian year essentially comes to us in two halves. The first half begins in Advent and rehearses for us the great Drama of our Redemption, moving through Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost. It all culminates, as it will this coming Sunday, on Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate God as He is in and of Himself, as He has revealed Himself to us…Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And so, as we move past Sunday, the second half of the Christian year begins for us. This is the time that we focus on conforming our lives to the Truth that has been revealed to us in the first half of the year. “As Christians we are not only to know that our salvation is in Jesus Christ, but we ourselves must become like him. Religion consists of things to be believed and things to be done. Advent to Trinity has made clear the truth to be believed; but belief is unreal unless it is made the basis of action. The emphasis in Trinity season is on the transformation of our life by and through the Love of God.” (Vol. 4, Common Prayer) Simply put, we know the Truth. Now we must respond to that Truth. Let’s get to work!
Vacation Bible SchoolThe big news for this coming week is that Vacation Bible School begins on Monday morning. A lot of hard work has gone into this. Special thanks to Deaconess Cynthia and Allison Sewrey for coordinating all of this and getting all the volunteers and the rest of us ready for what is shaping up to be a fabulous week. It is not too late to get your favorite young person signed up to join in the fun. Fill out a registration form on Sunday and give it to Cynthia. News of NoteKathy Willis made the decision this past week to forego any additional chemotherapy for her cancer. She is now under hospice care. She thanks all of you for your loving concern for her and her family. She especially thanks all of you for the cards, phone calls, and visits. When I visited her yesterday, her entire family had gathered around her. Kathy is at peace with her decision and knows she is secure in the arms of her Savior. Please pray for her, Candler, and her entire family, during this time. I will keep you updated. Request for VBSSeveral of you have mentioned that you would still like to help out with VBS but are unable to commit to the time involved. Here is an easy way to help. Our volunteers will be working hard this week, you could help by making sure they have something to eat each morning. Any type of breakfast goodies or juice would be appreciated. Please see Cynthia, or give her a call, if you would like to provide breakfast for the volunteers one morning this week. Bell UpdateI received some information about our bells in an email from our bell manufacturer. Two of our three bells have yet to be tuned. My friend Rick Watson, who is the co-owner and bell tuner of the company, has had some health difficulties lately. Tuning bells requires standing on front of a lathe for extended periods of time and unfortunately such standing has been causing Rick great pain. He is better now and hopes to have our bells tuned in the next 3 weeks and then we will be able to schedule installation. Men’s Night at the BallgameWe are going to try something different this year with our Men’s Night at an Asheville Tourists ball game. We have been blessed over the past 6 years to have tickets donated to us. Unfortunately, we have lost our “source.” And so we have reserved the Ingles Pavilion for the night of Monday, August 6. Cost per person will be $25. This includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, snacks, drinks, etc. Considering most of us spend at least $20 on food every time we go to a ballgame, this is a bargain and we don’t have to stand in line for food! This would be a perfect time to invite family and friends along. We can accommodate 30-35 people. And anyone you bring along that is under the age of 18, their cost is “on the house!” Sign up on the bulletin board to let me know who is coming. Father’s DayEven though Sunday is Trinity Sunday, it is also Father’s Day. The ladies of the church have planned a nice luncheon after the 11:00 a.m. Holy Communion. So plan to stick around for such goodies as London broil, candied bacon, chicken, etc. Welcome!
We welcome into our parish family Roger Weeks. Roger first found us when he evacuated the NC coast because of Hurricane Florence. He has now moved to the area and has become the latest faithful member of this church, as we follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ together. Roger is pictured here with his constant companion “Mr. Boo,” who we have all come to know and love.
Adult Sunday SchoolAdult Sunday School is on summer break and will return at the beginning of September. Youth Sunday SchoolYouth Sunday School will be off for a couple of weeks as we focus on Vacation Bible School.
